Laundry App Concept
Description of work
Overview
Washboard is a concept laundry service app that I designed with Figma while attending Cal Poly Pomona. As part of the project, students had to consider all aspects of the business, from the logo and user experience to the marketing strategy. We had 8 weeks to create wireframes, a pitch deck, and a final interactive prototype.
I was the solo designer of this app in Fall 2019.
The Problem
Laundry is a time-consuming and tedious task for many people, and it can be difficult to find a reliable and affordable service. This can lead to stress and frustration, and it can take away from other important tasks and activities.
The Goals
User: Quickly and easily select the laundry services they need
Business: Increase retention of customers
Product: Ability to add specialty services
The Research
To understand the needs and concerns of potential users for Washboard, I interviewed my friends, family, and fellow students. I also consulted with my mother-in-law, who was a particularly insightful source of information and helped me define many of the business requirements.
During my competitor analysis, I discovered many laundry services had an itemized checkout, but few offered any extra services. I realized that this was an opportunity for Washboard to differentiate itself from the competition and provide customers with a more comprehensive laundry service.
Based on my research, I decided to design Washboard as a full-service laundry app that offers a wide range of services, including ironing, repairing, and shoe care. I also wanted to make the app easy to use and convenient for customers, so I designed it so that customers could schedule pickups and deliveries at their convenience, and I made it easy for them to track the status of their laundry orders.
Ideation
I was tasked with creating a comprehensive laundry service app from concept to brand to interactive prototype within six weeks. Despite the tight deadline, I had plenty of opportunities to test the user journeys and app experience. I designed a few different versions of the checkout process, incorporating user feedback and providing a step-by-step guided process.
Results
Overall, I received positive feedback from students and teachers on the project. Several people mentioned that they wished the app already existed. While there is always more that could be done, this project was one of the few that I truly enjoyed during my education. These days, I'm grateful that I have a working washer and dryer, so I don't dream about someone else doing it. Maybe this will inspire someone in the future.
